News from the Open Access world

Pay it forward study by the Mellon Foundation

The Pay it forward study by the Mellon Foundation addresses the question of a wholesale shift of the scholarly journal publishing system to Gold Open Access. The study is based on qualitative research to find out what members of the focus groups think about Open Access and how it is financed as well as quantitative research about library journal budgets and institutional publishing patterns. With a focus on large, research-oriented universities in North America, the study shows that there would be great financial implications for institutions in a fully APC-charged journal market. The costs for Gold Open Access would exceed current library journal budgets and would make it necessary to find alternative funding to cover the cost difference.

This study is mentioned here in order to exemplify one of the hot topics within the Open Access world. Karger Publishers is dedicated to offer several publishing models and to be entirely transparent on the charges we impose on authors.
